28. Chalk and Clay

I saw them lowered in the setting sun
Just as the storm appeared over the downs
Nothing left in this town to talk about
No more old ground to be going over

Always wanted to shine like chalk in the rain
Always ended up stuck fast in the sucking clay
Everything fades away, fades away
Like chalk and clay, chalk and clay.
It all runs away, chalk and clay.

Well your face still shine in the rain
From that day we spent on the river bank
The storm blew the barley like waves
Our hands struggled with the fishing lines

Your hands are red raw from scrubbing the step
And painting it red like blood
We pass by like trains in the night
Missing the small signals of love

The small gestures that get washed away
like chalk and clay, chalk and clay

I still see them fade away like chalk and clay
